“So what’s the point?” All too often that’s the reader’s response to a letter, memo, or email because the message is hidden in language that is wordy. not focused, and hard to understand.

This engaging, practical, and proven business writing training workshop is for business writers who want to make sure they get their point across clearly and concisely. Participants learn practical business writing skills, tips, and tools they can use on the job immediately to make their communications more effective.

During the workshop, participants learn by doing. They analyze, write, and edit on-the-job communications. Activities include working in small groups, with a partner, and individually.  Participants receive:

  • Principles and practical tips to enable writers to meet the criteria for effective business writing today
  • Examples of business writing (good and bad, before and after) for analysis
  • Exercises — with material drawn from your organization’s documents — to allow practice of putting the principles and tips into action

Module 2: Formatting for Easy Reading

  • Use subject lines effectively
  • Write with topic sentences
  • Use lists to convey ideas

Module 3: Guidelines and Etiquette for Effective Email

  • Convey the right tone
  • Present a professional image

Module 4: Writing Clearly and Concisely to Meet Today’s Readability Guidelines

  • Determine your readability level
  • Write in the active voice, not the passive
  • Use strong verbs and avoid weak and smothered verbs
  • Structure sentences for easy reading
  • Write in plain English by using specific, concrete language to avoid ambiguity
  • Identify clutter and eliminate the unnecessary words

Module 5: Making Your Writing Correct

  • Recognize and eliminate common grammar errors
  • Punctuate properly
