This innovative Public Education Organization wanted to set new and inexperienced managers up to be successful people leaders that positively impact individual and team performance, engagement, and retention as they deal with diverse needs, constant change, and multiple stakeholders.  The highly customized leadership action learning program included 1×1 interviews, targeted pre-work, hands-on learning with actionable outputs, the cocreation of a plan for ongoing support and reinforcement, peer learning groups, 1×1 coaching, open-labs for group-based coaching and experimentation, and targeted microlearning experiences to allow for deep dives on specific areas of interest.

The helping inexperienced managers to become successful people leaders sessions took a select cohort of 20 people managers through the following five content areas:

  • Setting New Supervisors Up for Success
    Managers crafted a personal ‘North Star’ to guide their focus and intentions, learn to strategically to handle the unexpected, and gain authentic leadership and prioritization skills to set themselves and their teams up for continued success. This included designing a personal learning journey to achieve agreed upon outcomes with their boss.
  • Amplifying Value & Impact
    Managers mastered line of sight, SMART goals, and defining clear success metrics to ensure alignment with the organizational strategy and deepen the value and impact of their team’s contributions.  This included crafting a compelling personal purpose statement and learning how to co-create a team charter that aligned with individual and organizational ambitions.
  • Leading with Compassionate Accountability
    Managers learned how to encourage learning at work, prioritize prompt employee performance feedback, set explicit performance expectations, encourage proactive career development conversations, and be dedicated to achieving excellence through collaboration and continuous improvement.  This included mastering the art of accountable conversations by integrating feedback, ongoing dialogue, and forward-looking
    guidance techniques to drive performance, foster growth, and accelerate development.
  • Navigating a Dynamic Environment
    Managers gained strategies to effectively manage communication and conflict, maintain well-being amid stress, and adeptly switch management roles to meet varying expectations, all while fostering resilience within themselves and their teams.  This included examining the key leadership mindsets and shifts leaders must adopt to effectively support team through moments of ambiguity and change.
  • Driving Decision Excellence
    Managers learned skills to make confident decisions aligned with organizational goals, streamline decision making processes for clarity and efficiency, integrate diverse perspectives to improve decision quality, and engage key stakeholders to secure commitment.  This included developing expertise in identifying the nuances of true alignment, silent disagreement, and consensus bias to foster authentic collaboration, prevent groupthink in team settings, and secure commitment to decisions.
