This fast growing CPG client has been getting stuff done by muscling through things and having experts working in functional silos. With a goal of tripling in size, the leadership team knew that the bar needed to raised in terms of process automation, information sharing, communicating, being future-focused, thinking more strategically and systemically, and having a growth mindset.
The functional silos which served the company in the past were making it difficult to successfully lead cross-functional projects and programs. Different stakeholders and functions often had very different needs and strategic priorities that must be uncovered and navigated.
The current approaches were no longer scalable because accountability and ownership across functions and leaders tended to shrink and get blurred when things got controversial, complicated, or uncertain. The core team often struggled and froze when executive leaders asked tough questions.
