Using Compensation to Attract and Retain Top Talent at a Non-Profit

Situation

A nonprofit organization increasingly experienced many of the same types of organizational concerns that challenge for-profit businesses.

Attracting and retaining the desired caliber of talent required a philosophy to establish a fair and reasonable pay structure, offer competitive benefits, and support leadership development systems.

In addition their administrative policy and procedures manual had become outdated and in need of auditing.

Complications

Effectively changing compensation at a non-profit is easier said than done.

Approach

  1. Market Analysis: To begin, our consultants partnered with the client to determine appropriate salary data comparisons to evaluate the current pay practices.
  2. Competitive Positioning: Proceeding with the study through a job analysis, market comparison, and compensation structure design phase our consultants were able to determine their competitive posture and address any compensation concerns in an informed and flexible, yet systematic method.
  3. Design & Implementation: Once the new compensation structure was in place, it was important to marshal organizational energy toward the achievement of meaningful goals. This objective was accomplished with a new leadership development system. Once employees were focused on the achievement of organizational and team objectives their contributions could be appropriately recognized and personal development needs could be quickly identified.
  4. Alignment: Completing the study included an evaluation of current policies and procedures against best practices in general industry and in compliance with state requirements.

Results

  • Having completed all phases of the study the organization was positioned to attract and retain critical talent to accomplish the goals of the organization.
