Description:
Hiring is the most important decision most managers make, but interviewing and selecting candidates are often poorly developed skills. In these competitive times no one has the luxury of making a bad hiring decision. Additionally, the laws around hiring are getting increasingly complex.

Disgruntled applicants are far more likely to file claims, both with the EEOC and with the courts, if they don’t think the selection process was fair. In this business and legal climate, managers must develop an interviewing strategy that will support them in selecting top talent and avoiding the bad apples while not creating legal risk.

This is a stand-alone program but is most powerful when offered after managers have attended Managing Within the Law Part I and Effective Interviewing: Behavioral Interviewing Tools for Hiring Top Talent.

Our attorney-trainers are skilled facilitators with years of experience in the courtroom and the classroom. The program is highly participative with group interaction, small group case studies, video vignettes, skill-building exercises, and plenty of time to ask questions. Participants receive a comprehensive workbook and reference guide they can use again and again.

This half-day program includes:
Your organization’s policies and procedures, video vignettes, small group discussion, case studies and extensive Q & A.

Participants will learn:

  • The legal framework for hiring, including EEO laws, affirmative action, BFOQ’s, reasonable accommodations.

  • The power of job descriptions and how to use them to the manager’s advantage.

  • The proper way to prepare for an interview, including what can’t be asked and what should and must be asked.

  • The perils of peer interviews and how managers can avoid them.

  • Screening resumes without creating legal risk.

  • Visas and hiring – what managers need to know about H-1Bs and more.

  • How to handle applicants who are visibly disabled, pregnant, or with “unprofessional” appearance.

  • Rules about tests and non-conventional interview techniques – polygraphs, drug testing, quizzes and other strategies.

  • What to do when applicants volunteer “impermissible” information in a job application or interview. What type of documentation should be created before, during and after a job interview.

  • How to check references legally.

  • Understanding the employer’s policies, procedures and forms around the hiring process.
