Situation: Developing HIPOs
Thoratec Corporation, engaged in the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of medical devices for circulatory support and vascular graft applications, wanted to create a blended Management Curriculum focused on developing HIPOs for the top 75 selected managers across the U.S. that supports the current Performance Management Process and is focused on 3 core competencies to drive increased productivity:

Complications

  • New
    The company had never designed or implemented a comprehensive learning solution before and had never thought about a holistic approach to attracting, developing, engaging, and retaining top talent.
  • Bandwidth
    Managers, who were expected to be player-coaches, perceived that they had little to no time for training and development if they were to succeed at meeting their targets.

Approach

  1. Training Needs Assessment
    • Identified and assessed the e-learning recommendations to align with Instructor-Led training customized training programs.
    • Conducted online skills assessment.
    • Interviewed key stakeholders to understand Thoratec’s Performance Management systems, background of the designated competencies, business climate, and people issues which should be addressed by the training.
  2. Program Design and Customization
    • Based upon assessment and interviews, course elements (e.g., role-play examples, learning activities, and case studies) were adjusted as necessary to accomplish a consistent message between e-learning materials and instructor led components.
