Situation

Thoratec Corporation, engaged in the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of medical devices for circulatory support and vascular graft applications, wanted to create a blended Management Curriculum for the top 75 managers across the U.S. that supports the current Performance Management Process and is focused on 3 key competencies to drive increased productivity:

  • Motivating, Empowering and Coaching
  • Team-building
  • Interpersonal Savvy

 

Complications

  • New: The company had never designed or implemented a comprehensive learning solution
  • Bandwidth: Managers had little to no time for training and development

Approach

  1. Needs Assessment
    • Identified and assessed the e-learning recommendations to align with tailored Instructor Led training.
    • Interviewed key stakeholders to understand Thoratec’s Performance Management systems, background of the designated competencies, business climate, and people issues which should be addressed by the training.
  2. Program Design and Customization
    • Based upon e-learning assessment and additional interviews, course elements (role-play examples, learning activities, case studies) were adjusted as necessary to accomplish a consistent message between e-learning materials and instructor led components.
  3. Program Delivery
    • Successfully delivered using senior level facilitators with experience with other Pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Abbott Labs, Wyeth, Baxter, Geneva and Incyte Pharmaceuticals.
  4. Follow-up
    • On-site coaching and e-coaching follow-up for specific individuals designated by the company.

Results

  • 98.2% client satisfaction
  • 178% knowledge gain
