For the first time in history, four different generations find themselves working side-by-side. This dramatic demographic shift is the result of a number of factors including longer life spans and deferred retirements (due to personal choice or financial necessity). Today’s challenge: managers must now supervise vastly disparate working styles, as members of these diverse generations struggle to co-exist.

How does a member of “The Greatest Generation” provide direction to a tech-savvy “20-Something”? How will a “Baby Boomer” communicate institutional goals to a “Gen-Xer,” who may have grown up as a go-it-alone, latchkey kid? Today, companies need to be especially creative to enable these different cultures to work together, despite their varied experiences and values.

Competition for jobs and promotions, not to mention the yawning technological fault line between young and old, inevitably triggers conflicts. However, savvy management can harness the strengths of each generation and leverage decades of knowledge and experience not only to survive but also to thrive amid this generational divide.

Obviously, each individual is unique. However, an examination of the motivating factors that shape generations can be an effective tool to help maximize talent.
